Gah, I want to scream. How many times do I have to tell these people? My name isn’t Victoria. It’s VT. I changed it over the summer when I completed my sex change. I’ve never wanted to be a girl. I’ve never seen myself as a girl, and I’ve certainly never acted like one. I’ve always been a backward-wearing baseball cap with baggy pants and t-shirt type of person. I’m the only girl among my 4 brothers, what is everyone expecting I would become if not one of the boys?

“Victoria?” Mrs. Hardwick calls again.

Slowly, I raised my hand. “It’s VT.” I say.

“Excuse me?” She looks from her attendance clipboard to me and back at the clipboard again, seeming tired and sleepy from having already dealt with three periods of Sophomores and Juniors. “You are?”

“I’m Victoria, present, by the way, but I go by VT now. I had my name officially changed over the summer. The school just somehow didn’t get the notice.” There’s a deathly silence in the room like no one’s daring to breathe. Meanwhile, I can feel my heart pounding out of my chest. I didn’t mean to make such a big deal but I just want to be called the right name. Is that too hard to ask of a teacher?
