CMMC: June Close Ups

I must admit that I can focus on one thing but not the other. One of the goals for this garden season is to plant more flowers to attract the pollinators. At the same time, I wanted the flowers to have other uses as well. So I planted mostly herbs and completely neglected planting ornamentals (flowers that are only for looking). Thankfully, nature decided to plant some for me.

Like this guy, I planted bachelor buttons last summer but it didn’t survive the heat. So I ended up cutting it and composting it. Lo and behold, 4 plants popped up this year in random spots. They are definitely stronger than the plants from last year.

Have I mention how much I love the color purple?

My red potato plants have started flowering and to be honest, I’ve never seen a potato flower until now. Once again, they are in my favorite color.

According to the internet, if the potato plant begins flowering, it means they are nearing the end of their life, which can’t be so soon. When I bought the seed potatoes, it said 85 days from planting. It won’t be 85 days until early July. Could the weather have sped up the growth?

It also means potato tubers are forming beneath the soil. I found a baby red potato a few nights ago when I was out watering. It was near the surface so I quickly piled on the mulch to prevent it from turning green. Potatoes turn green in the sunlight and once it turned green, the green part becomes inedible.

Finally, here is a close up of a sweet banana pepper growing. It’s my first time growing these and I’m looking forward to try and pickle them. Pickled pepper – hmm – is it better than pickled cucumbers?
