#WeekendCoffeeShare – April Frost

Happy Saturday!

This week, a bout of late frost hit my PVC garden.

Oh yeah, I finally decided on a name for the garden! Instead of always calling it my garden, it’s now “The PVC Garden” because there’s a ridiculous amount of PVC pipes that make up the garden.

Do you like the name?

I’ve been trying to name this garden ever since I started it and couldn’t think of a name that fits. Haha, I wish I can take credit for this sign. Unfortunately, I’m not good at create art like this. I am getting good at commanding AI though. This may sound strange but I feel like I can “talk” to AI better (more smoothly) than I can talk to an actual person. Is that weird?

Anyway, frost hit the garden early Friday morning. The night before, I covered as much as I could with frost cloth. I’ve already packed away all the thick covers and didn’t want to dig them out of storage. So I had to resort to the thinner covers and double-layer when I could.

The temperature dipped into the upper 20’s Fahrenheit for a few hours. Though I wasn’t expecting much damage, there were damages, like the tips of the asparagus spears and the container fig tree. There’s probably no hope for either. I will most likely wait for a few weeks before trimming those off.

All the vegetables survived, some with hail damage and most of them weren’t too happy with the sudden cold. Some even bolted (gone to seed), but nonetheless, all the vegetables survived night 1 of 2 frost. I won’t know how it will fair the second night as it’s happening as I write this post. Per the forecast though, it’s not supposed to be as bad as the first night.

The only plants I lost were 3 borage plants because I didn’t know it wasn’t frost tolerant plants. I’ve seen quite a few English YouTube gardener growing borage in England, Wales, and Scotland, so I assumed it doesn’t mind the cold. Thankfully, I only planted half of my borage seedlings. I tried to grow borage last year but none of the seeds germinated. Oh well, lesson learned.

I went for a walk last night and saw the mountains covered in a fresh coat of snow. I wonder how much it snow but I bet it’s a lot. Hopefully, that will help with the reserve for the summer since there’s often next to no rain during the summer months.

Checking on my rain barrels, it looks the latest storm re-filled the barrels to around the 3/4 mark. Getting all this water makes me glad I invested in the two rain collection systems last year. The plants love the water. After the rain storm, I went out to check on the plants and could already see they grew bigger since the rain. Wow!

I appreciate you dropping by and reading about my week. Thank you to Natalie for hosting WeekendCoffeeShare and I wish a pleasant week ahead.

  1. That’s a great view of the snow-capped mountains. We’re having big temperature swing over here, too. With your care, your garden will thrive. Thank you for your weekend coffee share.
