Lens-Artists Photo Challenge #253: Fragments

Happy Sunday! Bushboy is the guest host for this week’s Lens-Artists Photo Challenge and this week’s theme is Fragments.

Fragments, what an interesting topic and as I sat here thinking about how to approach this topic, a thought came to me – aren’t all photos just fragments of a place and time? Aren’t our minds fragmented as well? We remember the best and the worst parts of life while often forgetting the mundane that’s in-between?

This picture is a fragment of a larger picture. In fact, I don’t even know I took this picture but I did.

This is one of the towers that makes up the Tower Bridge in London. I took this picture as we were passing under the bridge on a boat.

I was surprised to find I haven’t posted a photo of the Tower Bridge from my trip to the UK. Perhaps, it’s because that was not a stellar day, particularly because mom threw a fit on the river cruise, the reason being – she was unsatisfied with the photos I’ve taken of her on her phone camera. She threw the fit on our previous vacation.

She’s planning on going on another trip soon, can you see why I’m hesitant to go?

I am positive I shot this photo in Canada. Where? I can’t be sure. One of the national parks along the Rocky Mountain range. Or perhaps, it’s the woods next to Lake Louise? Like I mentioned, memories can be fragmented.

All I can say is I love nature. It allows me to temporarily disconnect from the real world and enter into a world where the loud sound is the sound of animals conversing with each other and, of course, the sound of my footsteps.

One of my aunts used to say, “Everybody takes a closeup of a flower and claims they’ve been somewhere. It’s just a flower, I can’t tell where the photo was taken. Where’s the proof?”

I love close up or macro photos of plants, probably as much as the next person in this blogging universe and I have agree, close up photos only shows a small fraction of the big picture and it doesn’t provide much proof of having been to specific location, if one is really looking for proof of travel.

But who cares where the photo was taken. Photos are only meant to show a fragment of the overall landscape, a snippet to allow you a taste, not meant to let you experience the whole thing. I don’t feel that’s the purpose of taking a picture – cramming in as much background as you can. Photography is about taking in the entire landscape by focusing on the beautiful part of the scene, isn’t it?

  1. I enjoyed the opening “a thought came to me – aren’t all photos just fragments of a place and time?”
I would try to not holiday with your mum or show her how to take selfies 😂
    Great post Yinglan

    1. She broke her sister’s selfie stick right before the trip. I tried to get her another one but none fit her phone. *sigh
She doesn’t like selfies anyway. She wants lots of background crammed in and her person tiny in the middle. That’s how she likes it and it’s annoying because I want a good portrait of myself but nothing she ever takes works.
Thank you for posing such an interesting topic. 🙂
