Lens-Artists Photo Challenge #265: Black and White or Monochrome

Happy Sunday! This week, on Lens-Artists Photo Challenge #265, Anne of the blog – Slow Shutter Speed – is the host and she posed an interesting topic this week of whether black and white is the same as monochrome and vice versa.

According to Merriam-Webster dictionary, monochrome is “of related to, or made with a single color or hue.” Therefore, these photos are technically monochrome.

Of the three, the picture of the Japanese Maple leaves is my favorite. It was taken during my first visit to the local botanical garden in June. There is a Japanese-inspired garden, which I particularly enjoyed. The first time I stepped into the garden, it had a particular calm (zen) energy that the rest of the garden does have. There were water flowing, a tiny bridge, and Japanese maple tree, what more does one need?

I don’t usually turn my photos into black and white unless it meets certain conditions though I will admit that I used to turn color photos into black and white willy-nilly, judging on the black and white photo of a dressing room.

No, there wasn’t anyone in there when I took the photo. I was actually waiting for someone to open the door so I could try something on. Trying on clothes is something I dislike because for some reason, I often go clothes shopping during the winter, that’s when I’m wearing several layers, so it takes a minute to try on clothes. Also, most of the time, the clothes don’t fit.

Anyway, back to photography. My candidate for black and white photos are often the photos taken in bad weather. I would usually try to edit them in color first before removing the colors from them and I must admit, some of them do turn out pretty cool.

  1. How I understand you and trying on clothes, nothing worse! But I do sometimes have a laugh, I can’t stop thinking who can actually fit in some of them… 😀
Anyway, your monochromes are superb, I like that fresh and crisp tone to them. I love your black & whites, especially the Yellowstone people one, it’s just perfect.
