1. Do you remember your first teacher at school?
The only first teacher I can remember is my first teacher in the US – Ms. Estes. She taught English to people like me at the time – newcomers to the US.
2. What was your best and worst subjects?
When I went to elementary school in China, my best subject was English. I was the best in my class and was even made class leader, who is responsible for leading the class in practicing English enunciations. Being the best in English in China did me little to no good when I arrived in the US because I could barely say a few sentences in English.
Growing up in the US, my best subject in school was undoubtedly math. I wasn’t exceptionally great at it but among other subjects, I was the best. My worst subject was definitely PE (gym/physical education).
3. Were you encouraged in class or did you just muddle along?
I didn’t finish my education until I was 25 and about 90% of the time, I felt like I was just muddling along, waiting for the class to be over. Don’t get me wrong, I love to learn. It’s the homework, quizzes, and boring lectures that are discouraging.
4. Would you like to be a student today?
I might consider college but kindergarten through high school? No way. Once is enough to go through the drama and trauma of bullying, of the daily homework workload, of adults treating you like a child, etc. So many reasons…
I might consider college if it’s free and I get to study what I want.

Thanks for joining in and sharing your world again this week. I hated PE and sport at Grammar school, but in junior school, I loved it!

I get that we need to exercise but I don’t like to be forced to run a mile and do pushups and situps while other people are staring.

I was made to run and when I passed out before the finishing line, was made to look foolish in front of my class mates as teacher said if I wasn’t so fat, it wouldn’t have happened.

My teacher used to make me compete in sprints even though I was one of the slowest runners in the class and often, an episode of vertigo would come on half-way and I would end finishing last. I still get those episodes once in a while and it’s the reason I don’t really do intensive exercise.
