I’m usually a fanatic when it comes to chasing autumn colors each year but this year, after spending autumn solstice in Japan, I had sort of given up, figure I’ve probably missed peak autumn color season at home.
Autumn colors season usually starts mid-September and peaks around the last week of September but it seems like the strange weather this year is finally in my favor. It was two weekends ago (early October) when we went autumn colors chasing in the local mountains.
This is my go-to trail as it’s only a 15-minute drive from home although if given the choice, I would head 90 minutes south or southeast. The scenery there somehow appear prettier or maybe I just want to do a long drive.
Mom was disappointed but I was surprised. It was only the beginning. Autumn colors were just beginning to show, it has not peak yet. “Maybe it’ll peak at the end of the month.” Mom said as we turned around. I agreed with her then but as I looked at the weather on my phone last night, it looks like the peak might be this weekend, not next.

Lastly, what can I say? It’s been a strange year with an extra cold and snowy winter to start followed by a wet spring and summer and now, fall is delayed? My garden is supposed to be dead right now but instead, it’s thriving mid-October. What’s next? A mild and warm winter?

Our summer is coming early I think. I have no real plant signs, but we had mad weather across the country. One group of farmers lost crops due to heavy hail.
Your photographs are fabulous as always. You are all lucky to have those wonderful colours. In our garden I can only rave about the yellow pincushion protea that is blooming, but past the peak.
Thanks for sharing your pictures. Love them.

We had hail about 2 weeks ago. I was standing by the back door, as I feared my plants might get damaged because I stilled had a giant tomato out there. Thankfully, the hail was small and it only lasted 5 minutes but I have lost a tree to hail. So I’m not surprised farmers losing crops to hail.
Yes, I do feel lucky to live in a place where I can see the color of the trees change in autumn. 🙂
