Lens-Artists Photo Challenge #274: Asymmetry

Happy Sunday! This week, we are dealing with a topic that’s the opposite of last week – Asymmetry – as Donna from Wind Kisses leads Lens-Artists Photo Challenge #274.

A lot of times, I like to compose my photos using the Rule of Thirds – dividing the photos into thirds and positioning the subject in either the left or the right third of the grid. Though asymmetric as sometimes it may be, I find the photos more pleasing to the eye, in my opinion. That is not to say I don’t apply other photo compositions techniques. Often than not, I compose my photos by instinct and many a times, further compose my photos by cropping when I edit in Lightroom.

After searching my photo library and archive, I’ve discovered a lot of my asymmetric photos came from photographing trees. I don’t know why but I tend to lean toward the right side when I photograph trees, as evident in these photos. Was I unconsciously grouping the trees on one side of the photo?

Lastly, I can’t wrap this post about asymmetry without this image. I feel like as images go, this might be as asymmetric as it gets. I don’t recall where I took this photo, somewhere in Yellowstone, perhaps? I’d bet the weather was meh that day with clouds and gray skies, those conditions, in my opinion, often calls for a black and white photo day as the photo will probably look better in black and white than in color.

I’m sure I tried to keep it in color but I like this old-photo look better, so I’ll just leave it at that.

  1. Interesting about your own observation of the trees. I found the same when I was searching my own archives for images. It must feel pleasing to us, and I like how you said it felt like instinct, Yinglan. All great examples, and I like the tree leaning over the road as a favorite. It just makes me wonder where the road takes us.. It leads us. Well done.

    1. Thank you. I don’t know how I don’t notice things like this until I go into editing but I guess, the asymmetry in the tree photos must had been a sort of instinctive move while composing the photo in the field.

  2. The rule of thirds creates asymmetrical images that are very pleasent to the eye, I think that is way we naturally tend to compose our photos that way. I love your tree photos, especially the snowy ones with the soft light.
