Sunday Poser #163 – Change in Habits

What are some of the things you used to do or habits that you have changed with time?

What are the changes that you have made in your habits recently? Have you given up old habits in favor of new ones?

I was one of those ultra-health-conscious people back in 2019. On average, I would spend at least 15 minutes reading and analyzing the nutrition labels on food items at the grocery store before picking the one with the least chemical ingredient or the one with the most natural ingredient. Grocery shopping would take a minimum of 2 hours and I would only walk out with only a few items and those items weren’t the cheap items at the store.

I would have expensive imported cheese stored in the refrigerator, genuine maple syrup in the pantry, and a tub of baby greens in the veggie section of the fridge. Oh, and I would make bread, like all the time. The garden was mom’s territory. She would let tomato vines sprawls and then complain about it being a mess. I wasn’t a gardener back then and I didn’t want to lift a finger to tend it.

Now and then, mom would open the fridge and let out a piercing shriek because she discovered mold had begun to form on top of the cheese and she would promptly toss the expensive cheese into the garbage without letting me decide.

The problem was I hardly got to eat any of it because she always cooks for two and trying to lose weight at the time and doing intermittent fasting, I could never account for the calories I was letting in. The other thing was she would eat just a little bit, also claiming that she needs to lose weight, and then guilt me into finishing the rest. I hate wasting food so I always complied.

Let’s just say because of my mom, I can never lose weight or go on a diet.

Eventually, I quit grocery-shopping my own food because why bother? I don’t get to cook my own meals. Each time I go into the kitchen, I would be bumping elbows with mom trying to clean up while I cooked because she said my method of cleaning wasn’t up to her standards.

Although to this day, I’m still quite health-conscious because of my auto-immune disorder, I turn to the garden instead of the grocery store because I know what I’m putting in the soil and I know there will always be something delicious out there waiting for me.

I did, however, had to do a grocery run last week and it was the hardest thing I had to do as I haven’t done it in such a long time.

  1. Looking after one’s health is important, but shopping for healthy foods is a pain. They are at least twice as expensive and go bad quickly as they don’t have preservatives. Growing your own food is a better idea. Thanks for sharing Yinglan
