What do you see # 219 – Sabbatical

Please note: this is 100% fiction!

Though his eyes were still filled with sleepiness, he forced his legs to move. “One two three, one two three,” he counted beneath his breath in a rhythmic fashion.

It’s been a long time since he had participated in such a long hike that required a night in a tent. His job had trapped him behind a desk instead of letting him do what he loves in the field. A week ago, he told his assistant he would be out of range for the duration of 2 weeks. She protested, telling him what would the people of the company do without their boss?

“Just do what you do on a daily basis.” He said. “Don’t worry, you’ll be fine.”

Everyone and everything will be fine, he thought as he yawned. The group leader was now thirty paces ahead and he didn’t look like he’d be stopping soon. Summoning the little energy he had in his body, he jogged to keep up.

“We’re almost there.” The group leader announced. A few minutes later, standing before a sign that marked the summit, the group leader announced joyously. “We’ve arrived.”

Together, as a group, they stood at the top of the mountain and looked out at the sun rising above the water. It was the most beautiful sight he’d seen in a long time.

  1. Yinglan, your fiction is a compelling adventure, artfully depicting the struggle and triumph of a mountain hike. The sunrise moment at the summit is beautifully portrayed. Well done! 🌄📝✨
