Lens-Artists Photo Challenge #289: Tools of Photo Composition

Happy Sunday! This week, John from the blog – Journeys with Johnbo – is taking the reins of Lens-Artists Photo Challenge and he’s talking about tools of photo composition, specifically, he’s focusing on shape, form, texture, and light.

I will start by writing that I am an intuitive photographer. Though I do focus on photo composition in the field, a majority of the composition decisions were made subconsciously. Much of the time, though, I would crop my photos when I edit.

I am focusing on light in this photo and it was taken somewhere near Page, Arizona. I remembered that day well. It had been raining on and off all day as a part of me began to wonder if this storm cloud was going to follow me as I traveled across the state of Arizona.

It wasn’t until I was about 90 minutes from Page that the sky began to lighten up, giving away to blue skies and sunshine. I decided to stop and stretch my legs at the only rest area I could find. Well, stretching my legs was the main reason but either way, the camera was coming with.

In the far off distance, I saw the sun shining down on these mounts and thankfully, my lens could reach it.

These 2 photos comes from Edinburgh, Scotland and I am focusing on an assortment of shapes in these photos. As someone who once studied structural engineering in college, I find architecture fascinating. In Edinburgh, I found the modern and old-world architecture blend in quite well. Some of the buildings kept the old-world architecture but clearly added a layer of modernity to the buildings.

I actually did a crop on the second photo, using the Rule of Third by framing the 2 wooden doors on the lower third quadrant of the photo as opposed to the middle. I’m not sure why but I found the photo looks more attractive this way.

Finally, let’s do texture. This is a boulder in my garden, at least according to the photo description. I have little recollection of taking this photo, but then, it was 5 year ago. I think I edited heavily in those days and most likely took this photo with my other camera.

  1. You sure caught Page on a nice day for photography! The clouds are fantastic. And the sun like a spot light right where yo want it. I especially love the texture in the rock. Such a work of art. And I think you were right in your editing of the photo from Scotland. I notice the cathedral in the back more.
