Friday Fictioneers: A Truthful Moment

Please Note: 100% fiction!

“Mommy, do I have to go in?” Annie hates her dance lesson. She hates the teacher’s strange accent and how she makes Annie put her leg on the pole.

“Sweetie,” Her mother stoops down to meet Annie’s eyes, “don’t you like to dance?”

“Not really,” Annie says frankly, hoping her mother would understand, “I mean, I know it’s your dream and all but that’s not me, Mom. I’m sorry.”

“You know what, I understand, sweetie. Let’s go home, shall we?”

“Really?”

“Really.” Her mother’s smile makes Annie wonder whether she should’ve said something before all the aches and pains.

  1. Ah, the challenge of motherhood – when to push them over a hurdle and when to accept their choices. I doubt any of get it right every time; I know parents at both ends of the pushiness spectrum and I’m sure all our kids will find reasons to question our decisions!

  2. I’d predict Annie will be letting her mother know what she wants (and doesn’t want) much more quickly in the future, now that she’s learned how easy it is to get her wishes. It’s a tricky business being a parent, and being a child. Nicely told here.

    1. It’s sad that more mothers or parents don’t listen or pay attention to their child(ren)’s needs and wants. I know many say to not spoil the child(ren) but I don’t think this is called “spoiled”. Anyway, I thought it was a nice change of ending.
