While editing your writing , are you creating masterpieces or just making do?
How much time do you spend on editing your work? Do you sometimes re-write your entire post/ piece or just correct the typos etc and do only the required work?
I tried using Grammarly for a few weeks recently to proofread my blog posts before posting because I don’t get to speak English at home, so sometimes, my spelling and grammar may be a bit off-kilter or I have trouble expressing my thoughts.
The only time I get to speak English is either when I go into the office, in a work meeting, or on the phone with a customer. The family members don’t speak English and it would be awkward to speak to my mom in English because she doesn’t really understand some of the lingos I use.
When I learned English all those years ago, I focused on grammar and not spelling. I didn’t spend time memorizing words like some of the people nowadays. I don’t think memorizing words is a good way to learn any language. I think vocabulary will come naturally once you learn to piece words together to form coherent sentences.
With all that said, I did not like Grammarly because most of the errors caught in my writing required me to upgrade my membership to see and correct errors. Besides, much of what I write are my thoughts and sometimes, my thoughts are wordy and rambly.
Most of the time, I am writing my posts with a “Make do” mindset like when I’m writing “thought” posts like this or when I’m answering questions on “Share Your World”, I’m not thinking of creating a masterpiece because this kind of posts aren’t meant to be “masterpiece”, they are simply a random jumble of thoughts pieced together. I save my “masterpiece” mindset for when I’m writing my flash fiction pieces but even with those, I don’t agonize over editing just because I pay close attention to what I write as I write it.
I don’t typically re-write my posts unless I feel they need it. I can’t recall but I think I re-wrote a few of the older longer fiction stories before re-posting them to my other blog – This is Another Archive – it’s a blog where I house my older fictions and flash fictions. It was because I felt there were a plot holes and the plot was underdeveloped in a way that I didn’t think it was when I published it years ago.

I think you write very good English Yinglan. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Your English is just fine, but I think you should learn Russian and speak that at home. Heh.
