Lens-Artists Photo Challenge #308 – Perfect Pairs

Happy Sunday! This week, the guest-hosting continues Albatz Travel Adventure with the theme of the Perfect Pairs and by pairs, we’re focusing on combining two photos to make it a pair.

The first thing I thought of were these 2 images taken at the Crazy Horse Memorial in South Dakota – one depicting a miniature version of the completed work and the other is a work-in-progress. I visited this monument during my road trip in 2017 and was surprised that this monument is still being worked on. Many speculates that it will probably not be completed during my lifetime.

My next pair is that of compare and contrast. The first image (left) was taken in 2022 and the other image (right) was taken in 2024. I couldn’t believe it when I saw the falls last weekend. What happened to it? Where did the water go? People were walking across the river like it was nothing.

Perhaps it’s another sign of climate change? There has not been any significant rain since the end of May. I have been needing to mist the leaves of my plants every few days to bring it some humidity. Maybe that’s where the water went, into the air.

Of course, I cannot end this post without some sort of a flower shot. If you’ve follow my blog long enough, you know how much I love a good close up of a flower. I struggled with that when I attended the Tulip Festival in April of this year. To take a close-up of every flower I loved would take probably more than a day. So I ended up focusing on photographing the fields of tulips and just closing in on the ones I absolutely love.

I love the color contrast in this photo and am attracted to the dark-color tulips than the pink ones. Maybe that’s saying something about me?

  1. I enjoyed all of these images but the Crazy Horse monument pair is my favorite. I can see they have done a lot of work since we were there in 2006 but like you I don’t think it will be finished in my lifetime.

  3. All great diptychs with an interesting stories behind them, probably not surprising since you are a storyteller. The face of Crazy Horse is so distinctive, and even uncompleted holds you in its power. I have a similar story of Yosemite Falls, in 1978 is was full and powerful, and there were about a hundred photographers there all taking what looked to be the same photo. Later in 2009 I was shocked to see there was no longer a waterfall there, at all, nothing. Your tulips are wonderful – I too like dark flowers, although in my case I think of them as ‘dark chocolate’ gardens…

    1. Thank you. 🙂 Wow, so that waterfall had shrunk due to drought and other natural factors.
      I tried to plant some dark color flowers in the garden this year but was unscuccessful because of pests. My darkest color flower was a red velvet Nasturtium but it was very short-lived.
