“What happened?” asked the paramedic as she, flanked by two male paramedics who were taller than her by at least a head, almost barged into the apartment about 5 minutes after I dialed 911.

Suddenly, my mind gone blank, “uh,” I snapped my fingers, trying to recall, “I brought home drinks at the coffeeshop down the street, two sips in, my boyfriend, uh, he collapsed and started foaming at the mouth, uh, I think he might be allergic to something in the drink?”

“Is that the drink?” the head paramedic pointed at the paper cup on the counter, I nodded and she took a whiff while the her fellow paramedics conducted assessment, “almond,” she muttered before turning to me, “is he allergic to almonds or any kind of nuts?”

“I don’t know,” I started sobbing, realizing I don’t know that much about him other than his favorite color is blue and his favorite time of day is twilight, “I just ordered what he told me over the phone – an almond milk latte with extra foam.”

“Cap,” one of the male paramedics said, “his BP is dropping,” from their angle, I could see my boyfriend’s body had begun convulsing, “Oh god.”

“Give him a dose of epinephrine,” the head paramedic ordered and in a matter of seconds, the paramedic jammed the epipen into his thigh and almost instantaneously, my boyfriend’s convulsion stopped, for a moment, it felt like everyone was holding their breath until one of the male paramedics announced, “his BP is returning to normal.”
