Sunday Poser #199 – Public Intervention

When you see someone doing something wrong publicly, do you correct them?

What would you do if faced with a situation like that? Would you just walk away or try to intervene? Have you encountered such a situation recently?

This is indeed a tricky question. The tricky part I think is how does one know whether the situation is right or wrong and whether it warrants interference?

I think it’s hard to be a good Samaritan these days because there’s always the risks of people telling you to back off or the situation wasn’t what you thought it was. As much as I want to help those in need, I’m not sure whether I would like to get a stern talking to in return. I mean, that’s not the reason why I helped. So you can say that I’m the hesitant type when it comes to wanting to help people.

It is sad, though, that there aren’t more good Samaritan out there who are brave to assist people in dire moments.

When I was young, I was the victim in such situation.

I was seven, my cousin was two. My aunt and uncle had gone off shopping, leaving me to watch my cousin. I was completely unaware I was standing in the kitchen knife aisle and my cousin had grabbed one of the knives from the lower shelves. Why the knife wasn’t in a plastic sleeve or something, I’m not sure, but the next thing I knew, people around me were pointing at me and screaming, “blood!” One woman even fainted.

I looked down and saw a pool of blood dripping from my hand. My cousin had nicked me on my left hand between my ring finger and pinkie with the knife. I remember not feeling any pain. Maybe it’s the shock? No one came over to help me while I just stood there. The people stared with fright like I was a ticking bomb.

Finally, my aunt and uncle came back and rushed me to the hospital next door, where I got a couple of stitches. Even today, that ring finger doesn’t behave like that of my right ring finger. I suspect a nerve was hit when my cousin nicked me.

Still, I think the people could’ve done something in a situation like this, especially when they see a 2-year-old grabbing a knife from a shelf in a department store. If this situation could had been corrected in time, I probably wouldn’t be writing about this today.

  1. What a horrible situation!

To answer the question, it is not an easy one. I have intervened a couple times when I’ve seen kids been abused (corporal punishment is illegal in Sweden, but that isn’t always something that newly arrived citizen care about,) and once when a friend of my ex-husband did not treat his girlfriend right. I guess it depends on the urgency of the situation if one should intervene, or not. Sometimes it might be better to call the emergency number, if it is a violent situation.
