The Unicorn Challenge – The Perfect Birthday

She opened her eyes to him smiling at her, “Happy Birthday,” he said and leaned in to kiss her in a way that made her want to make the moment last forever, “what do you want to do today?”

She thought for a moment, while she wished to stay in bed for the day with his arms wrapped around her, she couldn’t let the day go to waste. After all, they didn’t spend all this money to fly to another country and book this fancy hotel room just to be lazy. “Let’s go sightseeing.”

30 minutes later, standing outside the hotel, she said, “Shall we go get something to eat?” He nodded eagerly, as if he was waiting for her to say that very thing. Biting her lip, she tried to decide whether to go left or right. “Let’s… go right.”

As they walked, they talked and laughed while she made frequent stops to take pictures of the various statues and murals on the side of the road. Those weren’t the things she typically saw at home. “So interesting,” she said when they finally sat down for breakfast in a cafe, “so much art just along that tiny stretch.”

As she devoured a rich chocolate croissant or Pan Au Chocolate, he smiled, “How’s your birthday so far?”

“It’s perfect.”

  1. Sounds like a great birthday to me. You published this story on my first husband’s birthday. He would have been 78. My second husband is just three days behind him. So birthdays are a big thing this month for us. 🙂 xxx
