The Police Sergeant turned the key to the ignition as the rookie got in the passenger seat of the police cruiser, immediately, the Police Sergeant glared at him, “Don’t you worry, sir,” he said, “I’m just here to shadow you, you won’t even know I’m here.”
I sure hope so, the Police Sergeant thought as he pulled out of the parking lot to begin his daily route, seething at the fact that first, his partner got transferred to another station a week ago, and now, he’s being assigned a shadow, what’s next, I get assigned to traffic duty? Why do I feel like I’m being punished by the universe?
“Attention, all units,” suddenly, the dispatcher’s voice came through the radio, “a robbery is in progress,” he rattled out a location, “urgent, please respond.” the Police Sergeant knew exactly where that was, maybe today’s the day my shadow and I will see some action. He grabbed the radio, “Dispatch, I am approximately 5 minutes away from the location,” and then he turned to his shadow, “rookie, I guess it’s your lucky day.”
