Happy Saturday! Welcome to another WeekendCoffeeShare on this gray, cold January day. Come on in, get warm, and have a drink – coffee or tea doesn’t matter. As always, thank you to Natalie of Natalie the Explorer for hosting.
I shared this photo as part of Wordless Wednesday this week. I took this when I was in the office on Tuesday. There’s no windows in the cubicle in which I work, so I sometimes need to go out into the so-called foyer to get some sunlight into my eyes. Tuesday was one of those rare days when the sun was out and there was a lovely blue sky. I work on the building’s 9th floor, so I have the best vantage in the whole building, unless I head up to the roof, of course.
I mentioned in last week’s post that I completed the entire Japanese course in Duolingo. I’m not sure how many people can truly say they completed an entire course in Duolingo.

I began learning Korean this week, started learning the alphabet – Hangul. I’ve always been curious how to read those lines, circles, and squares in the Korean language and it turned out, it’s like English. The basic rule is to have a consonant next to a vowel. I am still on the basics and haven’t even touched double-vowels, double-consonants, and batchim (a third component).
I’m still not sure why I chose to learn Korean (of all the languages). It’s not like I’m going to visit Korea. It’s one of the many places my mom would never go nor let me go. Who knows, though, maybe I’ll get the opportunity one day.
This is a long weekend for me as I get Martin Luther King Day off on Monday. It’s the second work holiday of the year, the first being the New Year. I’m not sure what I will do yet. It’s going to be pretty gray and cold the next few days, not just for where I live but pretty much the entire country, especially the east coast.
From the forecast, it looks like the coldest will be Tuesday morning when I have to get up early to head into the office after the long weekend. GREAT! 🙄 It’ll probably be around 11-degree-Fahrenheit when I drive to work.
I had to put an extra layer of frost protection over the plastic for each of the raised beds in the garden. I know most of what I grow is very cold hardy but just in case it gets down to the single digit Fahrenheit. Now, that’s cold.
I really hope there’s sunshine next week as we head toward the end of the coldest month of the year. Until next we chat…

That is a lovely view from your office. I am so impressed that you are learning Korean. It seems like a hard language to pick up. Stay warm! 😊

Thank you. It is a hard language to pick up, harder than Japanese for sure.

It is great that you are learning a new language. Korean would be neat to learn, and an intimidating challenge, but cool.

So far, Korean does feel intimidating to learn because all it has is its alphabet, even if one does know how to pronounce it, there’s no clue to indicate what it means. It’s like stringing a bunch of random letters together.

Congrats on finishing the Duolingo course! I may try to finish one this year. I enjoy watching Asian shows on Rakuten Viki and would like to not have to rely so much on subtitles.

Thank you. I have been watching Japanese comedies and dramas on Netflix and sometimes, I too want to steer away from subtitles.

Oh wow, how long did it take to finish an entire Japanese course on Duolingo? I have never finished my courses in any language.

It took me about 550 days. I think consistency is key when it comes to language learning. There were days when I didn’t want to learn at all but my stubborn self was convinced to do just one lesson.
