CFFC: Fun with Food

I saw this sign at a restaurant when I visited Chicago 10 years ago. It read, “Any suggestions from customers will result in an additional charge on their check of 50-cents. Any criticism will cost $1.00.”

As I sat down with my group, I remember I kept wondering what would categorize as a suggestion and what would categorize as a criticism? Is it relative to the server? Has this sort of thing actually happened to a customer? Part of me though it was preposterous that this kind of thing would happen to anyone but I wasn’t taking any chances.

So I ordered and consumed an omelette without saying a word like “need salt” or “need ketchup,” fearing there would be repercussions.

When I saw the topic of “fun with food,” I thought the definition of “fun” is a bit ambiguous. I feel people having “fun” with the method of cooking said food is what led to the creation of different cuisine. I feel the chef that created the buns with the rubeckia flower on top was having fun at the time of creation.

Lastly, I think sushi-making has turned having “fun” with food into an art, don’t you think so?

  1. Fun with food is whatever makes you smile. Sometimes, it’s eating. Sometimes it’s cooking, and sometimes it’s just being with other people. These all made me smile, so I think you got it. Thanks for joining us.
