#AtoZChallenge 2025 – Nara

I did not know I have been pronouncing “Nara” incorrectly until I started learning Japanese. It turned out it’s pronounced, “Nala,” not “Nara.”

When I searched on the internet on what to do in Nara, Japan, one of the first results would be to see the deer at the park. Everyone’s crazy about the deer. I’ll admit, they are rather cute, in a distance but, still, they are wild and who knows what they’ll do.

Nara was about an hour travel from Kyoto by local commuter train (which stops at every stop). We did this as a day trip and the reason we went to Nara because my mom wanted to see Toshodaji Temple. Toshodaji Temple was founded by a Chinese priest that was invited by the emperor to train priests in Japan.

When I arrived at the temple, I was more attracted to the greenery surrounding the temple. It was very green, the shade of green that can probably be only found in spring, not at the end of September. I let my mom and her friend walk ahead of me while I went at my own pace to try to capture the essence of this greenery on a photo.

  1. I love the photo of the girls with the deer. The kimono are fun… “komon” style for going out, probably with some regional influences. The whole scene has a happy/friendly feel to it.
Don’t worry about the pronunciation. “L” and “R” overlap with a single sound in Japanese. Differentiating them is one of the things that makes English so difficult for native Japanese speakers.
