When my mom and I were in Ottawa, Canada in September 2022, I decided it would be fun to cross into Quebec – crossing from an English-speaking region to a French-speaking region. It would be like crossing state lines.
We walked across the bridge and when we crossed it, we were in Quebec. Honestly, I didn’t feel different because why would I feel any different? It wasn’t like French would start spouting from my mouth. I don’t speak French and I don’t comprehend French, period.
My mom started walking fast. I had no idea where she was going but it turned out, she was searching for a bathroom and when she really needs to go, she becomes mean and blaming me for things. After walking a while, we finally found a pedestrian street full of restaurants that were closed since it was still pretty early in the day.
As we sought out opened restaurants, I started to notice the differences between Quebec and Ottawa. For one, the restaurants here were either tiny or narrow with lots of stairs and for another, everything was in French. At last, we found a restroom down a set of narrow stairs but by that time, my mom was so grumpy that I doubted we would be exploring Quebec at all.
After the bathroom break, we high-tailed back to Ottawa without even bothering to exploring the French-speaking region.
Oh well, I guess I will have to wait to visit Quebec on my next visit.
