CFFC: Highways

That’s Highway 12 in the distance.

This highway is also known as “a journey through time scenic byway” and it’s one of the most beautiful road in the U.S. It’s certainly one of my all-time favorite roads. I drove the entire 123-mile stretch of the highway in 2021 and loved every minute of it. I loved the twists and turns of the road even though it doesn’t look like it in the photo, trust me, that section of the road was twisty.

The scenery was out of this world and it’s constant changing, as if the landscape was divided into sections. If I get a chance, I would absolutely drive it again.

This is highway 163 near Monument Valley.

If you’ve watched the movie Forrest Gump, you’ll know this highway was in the movie. It was when Forrest stopped running. I saw the sign and decided to stop for a photo. Unfortunately, as much as I tried to capture the specialness on photo, the truth was this is just a road, gets us from point A to point B, nothing special about it.

In 2017, as the final leg of the road trip with my aunt, I drove across the state of Wyoming from Keystone, South Dakota. We were heading for Cody, Wyoming for Yellowstone.

The rental car’s navigation pointed me to highway 16. There were so much weather experienced driving on highway 16. It started out cloudy before temperature dropped below freezing and it began snowing hard. Let me remind you that was the middle of May. A

As we climbed higher, it snowed harder. Part of me wanted to stop somewhere and wait until the snow lightened. While that wouldn’t be my first time driving in such weather, I wasn’t sure the rental car’s tires were equipped to handle if there was ice on the road.

I chose to drive on. Surely, it’s not snowing down the mountain. Surely, it was not. After maneuvering a sharp S-curve, I was rewarded with sunshine and greenery.

  1. It looks beautiful. It’s so interesting to drive in and out of weather patterns. From pouring rain to nothing, like a switch was flicked off. I once had the edge of a storm in my yard — there was a line — one side was raining and the other just a normal cloudy day.
