The Unicorn Challenge – Wrong Side!

For the Unicorn Challenge

Kim watches the bus as it approaches the bus stop on the other side. Am I supposed to be on the other side? She wonders, whipping out her phone to confirm with Google Maps as she remembers the bus is supposed to be arriving in this very moment. She zooms in until she’s staring at the pavement and the dot tells her she’s on the wrong side of the road.

Darn it, she curses as she realizes that people drive on the other side of the road in this part of the world. Half of her suddenly wants to take the risk and sprint across the road to make the bus while the other half is thinking that it might be a good idea to wait for the next one. Too many variables, her brain tells her as it starts to play out the bad scenarios – get struck by a car, get ticketed by the police, etc.

Ultimately, the safer half of her wins as she walks back to the intersection and crosses the road. Thankfully, buses run rather frequent, either that or the last one was delayed. The next one arrives in less than 10 minutes, which she eagerly hops on and taps the card reader to pay.

  1. Good depiction of the utter confusion when in a country where they drive on the ‘other’ side of the road, Yinglan.
I think your MC was wise – no point in trying out hospital care in a different country unless it’s unavoidable.

  2. Not going to get ticketed by the police in Europe, Yinglan, that’s a ‘freedom’ exclusively found in the USA!

But I sympathise with your character’s confusion, public transport in a strange city can be challenging.

    1. Getting ticketed for Jay walking in the US seems like a myth to me but that was one of the first thing my mom told me when I first moved to the US. Then I visited London and hardly anyone was following the rules. I also kept checking the wrong side of the street for cars when I was getting ready to cross the street. LOL.

    1. Thank you. It took me a while to get used to when I went to the UK and Japan, where people drive on the other side of the road. By the time I got used to it though, it was time to go home and I must get used to it again. LOL. 😀
