Sunday Poser #239 – Snobbish about Things?

Are you a snob- food/ culture/ ideology/ family- name?

So what about you- do you take pride in your brand of coffee, or the restaurant that you patronize, or have special feelings regarding your lineage or culture?

I’m like you, Sadje. I drink instant coffee, tea in a tea bag, and not at all snobbish when it comes to food or brand loyalty. The only thing that matters is that the food taste good to me. In fact, if I have a choice, I rarely go to the same restaurant twice. I love trying new things.

I once Googled my last name. It’s listed as the top 20 most common last names in China. So nothing special.

I wanted to change my last name many years ago to my mom’s maiden name but she wouldn’t let me. She might had thought it was too expensive and for the wrong reason, that I just wanted to be allowed to register classes a few days earlier.

When I was in school, class registration dates were based on last names. My last name starts with a Z, so naturally, I don’t get to register until all the other people have register, thus always missing out on good time slots for classes. Class registrations aside, I’m glad I didn’t change my last name because I don’t feel like me in that last name. Perhaps, my first and last names are like soul mates, nothing else will work.

I don’t think I’ve ever taken pride in my lineage or my last name. I didn’t know my dad’s side of the family at all. My mom and that side of the family never got along and all I could remember as a child was my grandfather treating my male cousin like a king and me like I’m invisible. I didn’t and still don’t care about them despite my mom keep telling me my grandmother really cared about me. I think she did but I didn’t get to feel that until it was too late. Still, the moments I got to spend with her was precious.

Lastly, when it comes to technology, that I can be a little bit of a snob. I’m an Android and Windows person, through and through. My most important thing when it come to technology is the cost and value. My current phone – Galaxy s23 – cost about half of the amount my aunt paid for her iPhone 15 Pro. Just about everything is the same, except the brand.

I also tried using an iPhone, it somehow felt harder to use than an Android phone. Hmm…

  1. Thanks Yinglan for sharing. I didn’t know that you could only register for classes according to your last name. That must have made things tough for you.
I used to have a Samsung and was a big fan. But after I got my first iPhone, and learned to use it, I think it’s overall easier than a Samsung. But Samsung has a better camera, no doubt about it. And I’m also a windows user.

    1. Haha, it’s one of the wacky thing in the US. The person’s last name dictates the date for class registration. I’m glad I’m not in school anymore.
I agree, Samsung definitely has the better camera. I tend to use the manual mode on my camera so I can edit it later.
