Six Sentence Story: Trick

Can someone please tell me who is supposed to be the person who says “Trick or Treat?” The little kid dressed in a pirate costume, with an eye patch, a hook for hand, and an tough facial expression, holding out a bucket for candy or the adult opening the door?

You see, I’ve lived in the US for over 20 years, yet, I’ve never learned the proper etiquette or the traditions of Halloween. All I know is my desire for that night is to either disappear into my room with the light off or I stay in the living room and watch TV until these kids are no longer trying to break my doorbell.

So far, each year, it’s been my mom who answers the door most of the time and most of the time, she would say some variation of “Trick or treat,” I can never catch what she says but all I know is, it’s not “Trick or Treat. So, yeah, I guess I know what I’ll be doing this Halloween – making sure all the lights are off, turn on the TV, grab a blanket, and cozy up by the fireplace.

Written for Six Sentence Story. The prompt is “Trick”.

  1. I normally avoid Halloween as well, however, I know enough about it to say that it is the little kids who are supposed to say “Trick of treat”. In theory, if you don’t give them a treat, they may play a trick on you. Or something like that.

  2. actually, Frank (who for the record, always steps on my Comments! lol) is correct, imho the supplicants are to invoke the Request/Demand/Threat.

My wide enjoys the ‘holiday’. If she happens to not be home of the 31st evening, I’m totally in a back bedroom with no lights (except for the computer) in the house

  3. Here, the kids say it. Also, if your front porch light it turned off, you are not participating and the kids are supposed to skip your house. Hours are 6-8pm, although some hand out candy until it’s gone or the kids have all gone home.

It’s also acceptable to put out a bowl of candy with a note saying, “Please take two” or whatever number you decide so they can help themselves.

    1. Those are all good rules. This year, my mom just put a bowl by the door. No one knocked nor said “Trick or Treat.” The children just grabbed the treat and dashed.
