Friday Fictioneers: In Search of a New Hobby

PHOTO PROMPT © Ted Strutz

“Honey, eat your breakfast,” Ted’s wife, Doreen, commanded, “what are you doing?”

“Taking a picture of my beautiful breakfast, made by my lovely wife.”

“Why?”

Ted shrugged, “Maybe I’ll paint it later.”

Doreen shook her head, “Paint it later,” she repeated slowly, “has retirement made you a little loony? You’ve never painted a day in your life.”

“How do you know? How do I know I’m not naturally good at art without trying it? Weren’t you the one who used to tell the kids, ‘you won’t know you’re good at something until you tried’?”

Doreen sighed with resignation, “You’re right.”

    1. I tried to paint too but I found out I couldn’t draw even if my life depends on it. I’m creative in words and photographs, not in drawing and painting.

  1. very encouraging fiction for this photo and you are so right about the trying and seeing – especially with art – and I liked your point because so many people think art/painting “is a gift that one is born with” – while it is more like driving – and fall under the learning skills. Of course talent and creative ideas might vary greatly – but you really made a great point with this.

    1. Thank you and you got my point exactly. I’m the type that often say “you won’t know until you try”. I believe skills are learned and honed and even natural talents don’t become perfect in first try.

      1. Yes and yes – and with that said, I also have come to understand that wiring and innate traits can make some skills easier or allow for a person to reach higher levels. Ya know?
