What advice would you give to a new blogger? And how did you grew your audience?
Compared to when I started my blog 13 years ago, I feel the term and idea of “blogging” has a new meaning these days. When I first started, I was under the impression that writing a blog post is a form of long-form writing, like there’s a certain number of words before your post will be read or even considered to be a blog post.
Looking at the stats on my blog, the posts in my first year averaged out to around 600 words per post, that’s quite a lot of words. In 2025, my average word count was around 280. What’s the lesson here? Word count does matter in a blog. Write what you want, express how you want, no matter how many words you’ve written for a single blog post, it is still a blog post. It’s the idea written down that counts.
The second lesson would be to make your blog readable and navigable to a reader. What do I mean by that? I don’t know about you but when I visit a blog, I like to head straight to the About page to learn what the blog is about. What is it that you write about? Stories? Life? Past Trauma? I like to know what I will read if I subscribe.
Trust me, I don’t throw this advise out there willy-nilly. I’ve visited some blogs that had no about page and only one button with no way to access the blog other than through the WP reader. No, no, no, you want people to know your blog, to navigate your site without needing an instruction manual.
How did I grew my audience? I guess I just kept writing. I’m not a great commenter, meaning, I am not good at commenting other people’s posts – here and in real life. So getting out there and interacting with other bloggers was the most difficult thing for me because in real life, it’s always been just me. My mom talks to me but it’s always the same questions – dinner, stocks, and travel. This made me rather awkward when I’m interacting with other people, even my co-workers.
But yeah, interaction is the key when you want to grow your audience. My audience started coming to me when I started participating in challenges. Writing and photo challenges are the easiest way to grow your blog. You get a prompt, you know what to write about, and your blog post will be linked to a pool of other bloggers.
I hope these were some helpful tips to start out as a blogger, good luck and enjoy the journey.

Thank you Yinglan for sharing your wisdom about blogging.

These are great tips!
Can you share in detail how exactly do you participate in challenges? Like where to find them and how to do it properly? I’ve been thinking of doing it for some time but I don’t know where to get started. Any tips would be really appreciated!

I participate in quite a bit of challenges and will usually leave a link at the bottom of the post (for example, this one) to lead readers to the blog hosting the challenge. To be honest, I would say I came across blogging challenges purely by luck.

Yes, interaction adds a new dimension to the blog post. Seeking opinions and comments provides the reader an oppertunity to interact.
