The Flower Hour #31: Rhododendron

I have been noticing quite a bit of rhododendron during my visit to Seattle. This isn’t something I see grown a lot in my neck of the woods in northern Utah. It probably has to do with the type of soil. Just like blueberries, rhododendron thrives in acidic soil. I know because the fertilizer I buy for my blueberry bushes will often often include rhododendron on there.

I’ve heard places with a lot of rain will have naturally acidic soil. I don’t know how much truth is in that but I believe it because rain is naturally acidic. Not very acidic, just enough to assist plants in taking in nutrients. Seeing acidic soil plants thrive here in Seattle makes me green with envy because I have to work hard to maintain an acidic environment for my blueberry plants.

Speaking of rain, I really hope there’s been rain back home. I want my aunt to check my barrels for me but instructing her on this sort of thing is very hard, especially when she’s so clueless of where everything is despite living in the house. Oh well, I guess I’ll know when I reach home tomorrow.
