My Conversations with an indecisive friend

calvin_arguingOver the years, my mom has turned to her friend, Christina, for advice especially regarding my education since Christina has three successful daughters.  Over the years, she has not only repeatedly changed her mind but she has caused me headaches as well like potentially having me switch major twice.  Here are some of our most memorable conversations.

More than five years ago, right before I graduated high school…

Christina: Aiya, do engineering, there are loads of jobs available.  Look at my eldest and second daughter.

Christina’s husband: Just go for civil engineering, companies are in need of female civil engineers right now.

Me: (shrugs, all right, whatever)

Mom: Listen to them, they know what they are talking about.

Three months later, right before I start my first semester…

Christina: You should have applied to Salt Lake Community College and then transfer to the U.

Me: (shrugs, don’t care, it’s too late to apply for anything)

Mom: Why?

Christina: Salt Lake Community College is easier, smaller classes and easier to pass.

Mom: (Groaned) You need to register for SLCC the moment we get home.

Me: (Frowned and sighed. You win, I lose)

Three Years ago, right after I declared my major…

Christina: Aiya why are you doing Civil Engineering? Mechanical Engineering is hot right now!

Christina’s husband: (nods) Yes, my company is hiring.

Right after we got home that day…

Mom: Change your major to Mechanical Engineering and start taking classes at SLCC this summer. Quickly check how many of your classes can be waived.

Me: (Groaned and scrolled through the computer) I have to retake all of my classes.  I would have to start over.

After a few hours of planning, I ended up dropping all the classes my mom was planning for me to take.

Sunday…

Christina: I don’t know why you don’t do accounting.  Look at my youngest, she is sitting at a desk pressing keys.  She earns $70,000 a year and she’s only 23.

Mom: (Looks at me like I told you so) See, I told you to change your major to Accounting.

Me: (Looks at mom and thinking, uh, no you didn’t.  Shrugs, whatever) It was too late for me to change major at the time.  I have to start over and that would be another three years.

Christina: Ho was thinking why did she go into civil engineering? With her size, she should have done account.

Me: (Looks at both of them thinking, uh you two told me to)

Later that afternoon, sitting in front of my computer…

Mom: Check the requirements for the Masters of Accounting, what classes you need to take.

Me: (Frowns and begin to search through the college website)

Mom: Start adding classes for this summer.  Take as much as you can.

…and that is how I am back in school again.  Personally, I have no interest of returning to school, at least not at the moment but if I don’t, I know I will suffer the horrible consequences of my action.  Of course that is another tale for another day.
