Do you remember when I told you about getting bad luck in your zodiac year? Of course not, I don’t even remember. All I know is people tend to be unlucky in their zodiac year. Why am I telling you this? Because my bad luck surfaced. I was born in the year of the sheep and 2015 was the year of sheep and it will remain the year of the sheep until February 8, 2016 or Chinese New Year, 2016.
Anyway, I thought I would make it through the entire year without much bad luck then today, February 2, 2016, the worse of the worst luck appeared.
I was in my marketing class using my tablet to look up something on Google when the screen suddenly went black. At first, it scared me to death. What’s happening? Oh no, don’t die on me? Those were my initial thoughts.
I pressed the power button and it seemed to be starting back up. I was a little relieved until a few minutes later when I noticed the screen was stuck on the logo. In that instant, I could felt my hands trembling and heart threatening to jump out of my chest. I tried to be as calm as I could so my instructor wouldn’t notice. It was difficult but I think I succeeded.
I don’t handle these situations well. You can tell by my speech in this post that I’m still overwhelmed by the anxiety. I’m not sure if it will ever stop at least until I have my tablet back safe and sound and working properly again.
I had this tablet since February 13, 2013, ten days after I began blogging, by the way, it’s the third anniversary of this blog tomorrow. At first, I mostly just use it to play The Sims, check emails, and take notes for classes and then later, I began posting pictures to Instagram and so on. I loved this tablet, still do. It’s like a baby to me.
Last October, a week before my Chicago trip, I changed the battery so it will last more than 4 hours each charge. It was November when I noticed the clock on the tablet had stopped working. I mean, the time would not change until I turned off and turn on the tablet again.
I had a hunch that I should have reset the device to factory specification but I didn’t want to. Really, who wants to wipe everything and download them again? I sure don’t. I did that once with my 6-years-old laptop 4 years ago. It was not fun but then again, I think if I did that, then my bad luck might have been inverted today.
Anyway, after school, I immediately drove to work and had my genius tech friend diagnose the problem. He can fix just about everything electronic except TV, printers, and computers. After running several tests, he determined my darling tablet has a bad charge port and probably some software issue. A factory reset is currently on hold until the charge port comes in since the tablet must connect to the computer in order to reset. I told him I haven’t been able to do that for two years and I should’ve realized that I have a defective charge port. I just hope a factory reset will solve the problem.
I just got home moments ago after making sure my dear tablet is safe and sound at work but as I pulled my car into the garage, I suddenly realized how much I miss it already and just how many things I have grown dependent on it to do like editing pictures, playing Sudoku, posting to Instagram, and making phone calls. Therefore, over the next week or so, I may be slow at replying to your comments and I will not be able to post to my Instagram account. I just want you all to know. So please be patient.
Curse my bad luck!

I understand completely…to avoid the anxiety that I feel without a computer I have three of them…:)

I have two laptops myself and I am mostly anxious of them failing.

That’s the way it works…I have a closet full of computer parts so if I need to I can build one in a hurry…:D

Wow, then you must be a nerd. 😀 I know quite a bit about software but when it comes to hardware, I don’t know anything about it.

Oh no! Hopefully the issue gets resolved soon! I felt my heart sink last year after buying a brand new laptop and within a few months my dogs knocked it off of a very tall table onto the floor. It dropped about 4 feet and was open when it fell. The screen went crazy when I picked it up and the surface that surrounds the keyboard had to be snapped back into place. I got the blue screen of death for awhile, but was finally able to shut it down and reboot. The only time I really have any problems with it, is if I try to carry it around with me. So much for having a “laptop”. I should have stuck with my regular PC which is hooked up in my bedroom. I just had to have something to carry around with me though, and now I can’t even do that! Lol….

Oh no! That must be terrifying. I would have paced back and forth and screamed if anyone interrupted me until that blue screen returned to normal. Well, I laptop does have its ups and downs. I would quite prefer a desktop myself if I don’t have to carry a computer to class.

Oh I was not a very happy person that night! I think my kids probably hid in their bedrooms! There’s nothing worse than thinking you may have lost everything you’ve ever written, because you didn’t think to make a backup of your work. The moment it came back on, I immediately made a backup of everything! Lol….

Oh, I know the feeling. That’s why after my computer and external hard drive failed the first time, I stopped putting anything on my computer’s hard drives and started putting everything on a cloud. Even my tablet. My tech friend asked if I needed to back up anything and I was like, there’s nothing to back up! There’s nothing but apps on the tablet.

Oh yes the cloud… I love this opition! I do double… I save everything to my hard drive and then save it to the cloud as well. Plus a ton of my stuff is on WordPress too… I think I’m fairy well covered now! 🙂

Me too. I save multiple copies of everything.

Oh, I’m so sorry Yinglan! I have had my ipad since March, 2013 and I am completely dependant on it. I do ALL of my blogging from my ipad. In fact, I don’t even know how to use my laptop (shame on me! It’s a Macbook Pro) and I especially don’t know how to do blogging on it because I have always used my ipad. I hope you are able to get your tablet fixed and get back into business again very soon. At least you only have a few more days of the cursed bad luck year!

Fortunately, like you said, I only have a few days left before Chinese New Year and fortunately, I don’t do any blogging from my tablet, just commenting and checking notification but still, I have no idea how much I’ve come to depend on it until now.

Hopefully, your friend will get it fixed and you will be able to use it again soon. It’s hard (for me) to have to change things so suddenly. One of the updates to IOs crashed my ipad and I was scared to death! I called Apple Support and they kindly worked with me for 6 hours to get it back up and running. Whew! I was so happy!

6 hours! Wow! It’s good to hear you got it resolved.

Yes! It was a long process but Apple Support was very kind and worked with me until it was resolved.

That’s good to hear because I didn’t have a good experience when my ipod broke.

That’s too bad. Of course, this crash was caused by an iOs update – maybe that is why they were so kind and worked with me for 6 hours.

Good luck with this. Right now, the only device I own that can “like” or leave comments outside my own account on WP is my Android tablet.
That said, I like to think of episodes of “bad luck” as also using up my bad Karma — hence, things should go pretty well afterward. 🙂

I sure hope that’s the case.

I have had a similar problem a few times with the work tablets ( ipads ) Frustrating and time consuming to reset and update and back up again. I hope you sort it out soon. We get so reliant on our devices, don’t we?

At the moment, I’m just waiting for the part to come in which it’s set to arrive on Tuesday and then I’ll see where it will go. We do get too reliant on electronic devices.

I so understand your anxiety. My laptop is my baby and it started having issues a few months back… bad hard drive. Luckily they were able to clone it and I didn’t lose anything, though I did have it all backed up… hope your baby is safe and working again soon!

My laptop has a bad hard drive too and it’s scared me a couple of times. I should have it cloned just in case. My friend told me he hopes to get to my tablet today or tomorrow. So hopefully, I’ll have it back and functioning again by this weekend. Fingers crossed.

You should definitely get it cloned if it is still functioning now… It is scary to lose everything and expensive to replace those harddrives. The clones are cheaper. Keeping my fingers crossed for you and your tablet 🙂

I know the feeling. I lost a ton of files when my first external hard drive failed.

I lost 3/4s of a novel once.. cried for weeks over it… I have an external drive now

Ouch, yeah, I would’ve cried for weeks too but I wouldn’t put too much trust in external drive. I put all my important files on a cloud, that way, I don’t have to worry about any unreliable hardware.

*nods* I should probably do that too… we did lose one external a few years back.. thankfully I had transferred all of my files to another external, but my ex lost all of his stuff
