What is your least favorite holiday side dish? (for any holiday)
I have two least favorite holiday side dishes and both have to do with Thanksgiving – turkey stuffing and cranberry sauce. I tried it both ways – stuffing inside the turkey and cooked separately from the turkey – it still tastes like mush to me. I guess cranberry sauce just doesn’t make sense as a side dish.
What is the ugliest or most tasteless decoration you’ve ever seen?
I can’t say. I haven’t seen it yet.
What is a cherished or unusual (either or both) family tradition from your childhood? (this is the recycled Evil Squirrel question that got bungled by moi, and sounded like a packaging question. My bad).
By childhood, I am assuming any age before 16 but it doesn’t really matter, there were no family tradition for me to think of. Although, my step-dad’s family has the tradition of allowing each person to open a present on Christmas eve felt pretty special to me despite this being a fairly common tradition.
You’re walking down the street, feeling great — what holiday song would be playing in the background? (aw, play along. I realize some of you prefer a very silent night. It is an option to pass on this question too. No offense will be taken).
I would say something fast, upbeat, and modern. Nothing from the oldies, nope, I need something that makes me smile. Maybe something like Jingle Bell Rock?
I thought Jingle Bell Rock was an oldie. Has to be pretty old for me to know it. New songs are too hard for me to learn. Merry Christmas, Yinglan.

Perhaps it is but some of the recent renditions are pretty good. I haven’t found any modern Christmas songs I like yet. For now, I’m sticking with more of the traditional tunes. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, Oneta! 🙂

Least favorite holiday dish: mashed potatoes. Now, I do love mashed potatoes but I don’t understand why they grace the holiday meal table. They are inexpensive to make so maybe it’s a filler dish?

I think you might be right about mashed potatoes being a filler dish because that’s how it’s feeling to me too.

Not so inexpensive when you add butter, cream, and sour cream like I do. They’re good and my family eats a lot of them.

You’re right – I was thinking plain mashed potatoes, not with the addition of other yummy extras!

Thanks Yinglan for Sharing Your World! Stuffing and cranberry sauce are two of the more disliked side dishes you might find at a holiday dinner! So you’re not strange for not liking either of them. 🙂 I hope you’re feeling well and all is going smoothly! Opening a prezzie on Christmas Eve is still nice if a family does that together and makes it special! I hope your week is warm and merry, and that you have the gift of peace!

Thank you. It looks like I’ll have to stick to a soft foods diet at least until the New Year. So it doesn’t look like I’ll be having any stuffing nor cranberry sauce soon. Whew! 😀 I wish you a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. 🙂

I don’t really care that much for sweet potato pie (sorry Mom).
My favorite Christmas song is This Christmas by Donny Hathaway (a close second is Santa Baby by Eartha Kitt — no, not Madonna’s version!!)
The strange thing: When I was really young, I used to feel like Christmas was really on its way when I could smell the wax my father used to wax the living room floor until it was gleaming right before Christmas.

I don’t like sweet potato pie either. I don’t think sweet potato belongs in a pie.
