Day 16
What is a cause you’re passionate about and why?
One cause I am passionate about is protecting the environment and its wildlife because as a temporary resident of this planet, I feel it’s my duty to do my part to leave the world a better place than I found it.
It’s the reason I don’t eat seafood. My family thinks it’s because I don’t have enough teeth to crack open a crab leg but the truth is my heart breaks every time we do a family gathering and someone buy a dozen crabs and then one of my aunt greedily devours all, not knowing they are taking lives.
It’s sad to see news reports about diminishing marine life due to consumption. I often wonder why can’t people let these poor creatures be? There are plenty more to eat than crabs, lobsters, oysters, and other shellfishes.
And I get it, there are people and cultures who thinks survival means sacrifice but does it have to be another life? Why can’t it be a plant’s life as a wise person once said, “a plant just wants to give,” well, there you go.
It also irks me to see garbage floating in the middle of the ocean. I feel like there are not enough individuals who cares about this world. I know my family doesn’t care about the world from my mother’s random shouts when she watches her YouTube videos about environmentalists protesting somewhere. “So stupid!” She’d comments, no knowing I care about the same thing as these people.
My mom even laughed when I told her once I made a donation to the World Wildlife fund. Let’s just say I don’t tell her this stuff anymore.
Anyway, it is nice to know there are people out there who cares as I take small steps to make my tiny part of the world a greener one.
Great points and the Goodall quote is right on the mark!
I eat mostly vegetarian, heat my house with a green geothermal furnace, recycle, and donate monthly to the Environmental Defense Fund and to the Sierra Club. 🙂
