Friday Fictioneers: Those Frightful Moments


“Come on Mommy, let’s go home.” Sarah yanks on her mother’s sleeve as tears trail down her face. “Please mommy, I’m cold and it’s very wet out here.”

Her mother doesn’t budge nor wake from her park-bench-slumber. “Mmm, go play with the other kids, honey. Mommy’s sleeping.” She slurs without opening her eyes.

“But Mommy, there’s nobody.” Sarah looks toward the desolate playground. After last night’s rain, the playground even looks a bit haunted. “Mommy please.”

Suddenly, she hears a can being kicked. Frightened, she hurriedly climbs to the highest spot on the playground, where she sits and silently sobs.
