Please note this is fiction!

My neatly folded apron falls to the floor as I open the door to my locker. “Shit!” I swear under my breath. It’s never supposed to touch the ground. Quickly, I brush off the invisible germs with my hand, hoping the five-second rule applies.
Today is the first day I’m going back to working part-time at the sandwich shop after working full-time all summer. It’s going to be a tough adjustment, especially in the amount of income I’ll be able to put into my “Getaway” fund.
I’ve enjoyed the little boost in income over the summer as I’ve been able to take the extra money and stash in my “Getaway” fund and by getaway, I don’t mean vacation. I mean to leave my miserable life with my so-called legal guardian behind and start one of my own.
The court’s ruling that my mom’s brother be my legal guardian is the worst thing that’s ever happened to me. Why couldn’t the court see he’s worse than both my mom and my dad? My uncle’s an alcoholic and a druggie. Every paycheck, I’m to fork over a certain amount to cover his “lifestyle” while using the rest of my meager earnings on food and other necessities.
Sometimes, he’ll even take all of it.
I sigh and give the apron one more brush before stuffing it back into my locker, which has been sanitized and cleaned with bleach and Lysol. “There, and don’t you ever fall on me again.”
