Sunday Poser #134 – Blog Stats

How often you check your blog stats?

Do you check your blog stats often? And does it make a difference to you, if people are visiting your blog more or less?

I am trying to check my blog stats less frequently but sometimes, I can’t help it. I love numbers and though the statistics don’t tell me much about how my blog’s doing, I’m still curious.

I say the stats don’t tell me much because, sure, they let me know what people like to read when they visit my site but more often than not, the data is quite inaccurate as there are people who visits just for the sake of opening 20 posts in 20 tabs and clicking like on every one of those instead of spending the time to really read what I’ve written. Those are outliers and as good as I was in my statistics class, all that knowledge had gone out the door the moment I took my final exam. So I have no idea how to even begin to take out the outliers to get me a clearer picture of my blog’s popularity.

That’s all stats really are, right? To tell you how popular your site is? The more you post, the more you publicize, the more views you get, isn’t that how it works?

When I first started blogging, I used to check my stats every time I got a notification because a notification would mean there’s a change in stats. That’s when the dreams started. I kept having dreams of my blog rising in popularity, that I suddenly started haven’t hundreds of views per day and lots of likes and comments.

My chase for blogging stardom led to me posting multiple times a day and eventually, that’s all I would be doing – blog and write. Chasing those stats became my obsession until I hit a wall – the pandemic. Anxiety over the uncertainty and impending doom was the thing that woke me from obsessing over my blog stats and blogging steam.

My posting became spotty as I spent the time to reflect on what I’ve written since I started this blog. Then I decided that when I re-commit to my blog, I will be writing thoughtful, meaningful stories, no more lazy posts like thought of the day, humor of the day posts. I started this blog for a reason – to tell stories and that’s what I intend to do no matter how unpopular or popular it is.

Since then, I’ve viewed my blog stats as a loose guide of which posts are popular and which are not. Though I do aim for 100 views per day, if I don’t get it, I’m fine with it, I’ll try again tomorrow. I’m not as obsessed as I was before and I have more fun blogging. Besides, interaction is more fun.

  1. Makes sense. I used to obsess over stats with my old blog, which led me to make junky participation posts. Now I post what I enjoy, but I do hope to be read, so I tweak a bit here and there, such as eliminating most swear words, etc. Happy blogging! 🩷

  2. I must admit that when I have constructed some of my own hosted blogs, I have saved web space by deleting without reading my internet traffic logs. I think I was in the minority. More interested in discussions. For me it is words and conversations. I do like the “likes” on wordpress, because I get to become acquainted with people. Before I retired, and for all of my writing/editing freelance work, word of mouth brought in new clients, work, and relationships. Over 10 years into retirement, and I still know a lot of the same people.

  3. The pandemic was actually when I focused much more on my blog. Before that I rarely checked stats. I believe we all grow with each blog. Personally, I prefer a comment once in a while because then I can determine if someone has actually read my blog and since it’s worldwide isn’t it fantastic that you can go to bed or wake up to new stats? You’re obviously doing what you need to and I appreciate your blog. It’s amazing how someone else’s blog can spur an idea (for me) completely unrelated to what they might be writing about.

    1. Reading blogs actually made me more anxious, especially at the beginning of the pandemic because everyone was writing about the”impending doom” at least that was the common theme I saw. It made me feel even more uncertain.
I appreciate comments because it means what I’m writing is relatable to people and I love the conversations.
      Thank you for your comment.

  4. You are not alone. I think most bloggers go through a period of gettings addicted to the stats (speaking from experience). Good for you for blogging more for the enjoyment of blogging. 😊

    1. I believe it. I’m moving toward jotting down my thoughts and writing my life stories with pictures and less trying to keep my readers entertained with meme because that’s not my blog’s about.

  5. I just woke up from a dream where I was at a wedding, and I kept trying to check my stats on my laptop. I think that would suggest an obsession. I write to try to create interesting and compelling stories, but I’m WAY too concerned about what everyone thinks about them. It an obsession I haven’t been able to control. I guess I’m a work in process. Good piece.
