Note: this is 100% fiction.
“You’re almost there, just a few more seconds.” The animal trainer muttered as she waited for the director to yell cut. Buddy the dog has been suffering lately, whether from age or the physical and emotional toll the movie has been having on him, she didn’t know. All she knew was he’s no longer that energetic dog as when she first met him all those months ago.
Poor Buddy, she thought.
“And cut!” The director yelled. “Get that mangy looking thing out of here. We need to set up for our next scene.”
Running onto the set, she scooped Buddy into her arms before shooting the director a look that would fire daggers in her imagination. “Don’t listen to that mean man, Buddy. You’re not mangy. You are the most awesome creature on Earth.” In response, Buddy perked up and replied with a big slobbery kiss.

Absolutely, even with Buddy’s professionalism, he’s still a dog and can sense hostility from people.

Presumably it was a mangy-looking dog they wanted when he was hired for the scene? He’s just method acting.
