#AtoZChallenge 2024 – Quiet

Q is for Quiet.

According to my blog’s archive, this is the third time I’m using “Quiet” for the letter Q. The first time was in 2016 and the last time was in 2021.

I love it when my surrounding feels quiet. No bathroom ventilation fan going off, causing my closet door to vibrate, no loud YouTube playing through two closed doors, no annoying pop songs playing on a loop. As I’m writing this post, it’s raining outside. Ah, so nice.

I am a quiet person, always have been. I’ve never been a conversation starter, I am a conversation follower. I think it’s the reason why I love to drive. It’s just me, the open road, and my music. I’m never bored when I’m driving by myself but I feel I’m always in the hurry when there’s someone in the car with me and it’s when that person starts to talk that makes me nervous.

I remember the drive to Idaho in March. Not only was I not allowed to listen to my music but I had to endure my mom’s lecture the whole time. She wanted me to comment but I didn’t know how, the non-quiet was making me burst in tears inside.

So I think it’s the reason why I enjoyed my road trip last Christmas so much – the quiet. It allowed me to contemplate on my thoughts and emotions during those long drives instead of feeling like I might burst into sobs at any moment.

  1. I enjoy occasional quiet, but I prefer noise; to be specific, the right kind of noise. I’m listening to Stryper (Christian heavy metal band) as I’m writing this. I use headphones to protect me from other household noises. For me, small well timed doses of quiet can be healing and profound, but I’m a big city boy and I love heavy metal so…ha ha

    1. I don’t mind a bit of noise but, like you wrote, the right kind of noise. I listen to podcasts through headphones at work and occasionally pop my noise cancelling earbuds into my ears for some music. I sometimes would classify those as quiet because they make my brain quiet.
