#AtoZChallenge 2021 – I am Quiet

I may seem quiet on the outside but really, I am just an awkward conversationalist with a vivid imagination and a loud mind.

I choose to be quiet, not because I don’t have anything to say, it’s because my thoughts are so jumbled sometimes that it takes a while for me to pick the right words to say exactly what I want to say. I am blaming this on my horrible quality of often over-analyzing things.

Sometimes though, being quiet is better than being talkative. It’s one of those “less is more” situations.

Things at work is never perfect. The software department is constantly switching things up, changing views, removing necessary rights while adding unnecessary rights, etc. They think they’re making things easier but sometimes, they are just making things worse.

Whenever this happens, my former supervisor had encouraged my co-workers and I to write down the things that weren’t working and shoot her an email so she could send it to the software department.

It’s what I’ve always done. Writing come so much more naturally than speaking for me.

My co-workers, on the other hand, choose to verbal about things. The one-hour weekly meetings almost never end on-time. It frequently lasts 90 minutes to 2 hours with my co-workers complaining about every little things.

Before the pandemic, I would dread these meetings because I would be sitting in the conference room for who knows how long while work would pile in my inbox and my desk. Now, I can just mute myself and work while listening in to the meeting.

“You’re quiet,” my former supervisor would say periodically, “do you have anything to add?”

“No,” I would often say as I had learned since working for this company, if something works fine, don’t say anything because otherwise, the software department will make that “something” not fine.

Being quiet definitely has its advantages and disadvantages especially in situations where “don’t ask, don’t tell” is preferred.
