U is for Under Appreciated
In an attempt to externalize my emotions, I told my mom a few nights ago while she was taking pictures of the blooming tulips and daffodils in the front garden, “You should appreciate me for this year’s blooms.”
“Why?”
Really? I thought. Do I need to explain how I was on my hands and knees last October planting bulbs and make sure the soil has enough nutrients to produce such lovely flowers?
She went back into the house before the words could come out of my mouth. The truth is I have been feeling under appreciated for a long time. The family – my aunts, uncles, and even my mom – think my happiness can be bought with cash. It makes me feel like one of those half-naked pole dancers at a club. Money can’t buy happiness. I cannot be bought.
I’ve never thought these simple words, “I appreciate your hard work,” would have such profound power until my manager said them to me. Those words made me feel motivated to do the work and often put a smile on my face. I don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone say that to me until I started working at my current job.
Sometimes, I would like to hear a simple “thank you,” or “you’ve done a great job,” come out of their mouths for once as opposed to be always judging and complaining of every little thing I do.

I don’t think there is a person who reads your blog who doesn’t appreciate you. If it matters, I do.

I appreciate you and I think you’re so right about how people underestimate the value of expressing and receiving appreciation. Imagine how much resentment could be disarmed by simple words of gratitude and appreciation. Not to blow my own trumpet, but I said to my wife yesterday, after she asked how my dinner was, ‘Thank you for loving me with food.’ She smiled. It’s so easy. Even if we never or rarely receive it, it is easy to appreciate people with our words.

Absolutely, positive affirmations are so powerful. It can make someone’s day go from bad to good in an instance. I think it’s neccessary to gift someone with words of appreciation each day. Thank you for reading and commenting.

Great quote. And, yes, hearing someone appreciates what you do is such a small thing, yet it matters a lot.
