If we were having coffee, I would welcome you to #weekendcoffeeshare, which is hosted by the lovely Natalie of Natalie the Explorer. I would also tell you I honestly thought the weekend wouldn’t be here on time. It’s been such a hectic week that I feel like I should just spend the next 48 hours asleep in my bed. Unfortunately, life doesn’t work this way, at least not my life. 😔
Garden Harvest
Let me tell you two of the most beautiful and delicious things I harvested from the garden this week. I guarantee your mouth will be salivating.

The watermelon was one of the juiciest I’ve ever eaten. This is the Early Crimson variety. I got the seeds from TrueLeaf – a local seed store – after searching between my favorite seed stores for a short season watermelon variety. This is a 70-day variety, so it’s perfect. My mom and my aunt thought I’m just comforting myself but I wasn’t. It was truly the best melon of the summer.
This is my second time growing this variety of cantaloupe – Heart of Gold. I grew them last year but it didn’t get ripened in time. I’ve been checking every day to see if this melon has detached itself from the vine. On Thursday, as I waited for the pest control guy to check the mouse traps, I noticed this melon is no longer attached to the vine. Let me tell you, it was like drinking nectar. Delicious!
My mom’s back surgery
My mom had her back surgery on Wednesday. Before the surgery, she was joking that exactly 33 years later, she’s going under the knife again.
Wednesday is the 16th day of the 8th month on the Lunar calendar, which is the calendar based on the lunar cycle, such as on the 15th day of each lunar month, the moon will be full. I was born on the 17th day but she said the c-section surgery began on the 16th. So I guess according to the lunar calendar, I turned 33 on Thursday.
After dropping my mom off at the hospital early Wednesday morning, I headed for the office. I wanted to be home but at the same time, I wanted to stay close in case something went awry with the operation. Of course, the operation was a success. I received the call from the hospital at a quarter to two PM telling me so. I must say, I immediately let go of a breath I didn’t know I was holding. Of course, I knew everything will go okay but still, there’s that possibility…
That afternoon, right after work, I headed up to the hospital to visit. It took a while to find her room with no one knew where it was and there was no staff around to tell me. Eventually, I did find someone to guide me. When I entered the room, my mom looked like a puddle. I guess that’s what a back surgery does to a person.
I stayed for about an hour before needing to head to watch a soccer with my coworkers. This activity was planned months ahead. Mom’s surgery just coincidentally fell on the same day.
The Soccer Game
This was my first time watching a live soccer match. I’ve never been a fan of soccer or any sports but after this, I realized I just don’t like watching sports on TV. The commentary and commercial breaks took away the joy of sports. Live is so much more exciting and I even found myself getting into the game.
I certainly did not know soccer was such a big deal in Utah. The roads near the stadium were blocked off, causing me to had to take detours, and I bet Google Maps had a great time making me do so much turns.
Mom’s hospital discharge
My mom ended up getting discharged from the hospital the next day. Thankfully, the nurse was able to wait until I got off work to discharge her but that didn’t mean work and picking my mom from the hospital were my only tasks. I also completed the emission test on my car, which caused me an hour and made me to had to request 2 hours of PTO (Paid time off) from my manager, just because I knew I wouldn’t be able to complete my 40 hours.
Thursday evening was almost non-stop. First, I had to get my mom situated on the couch, then I had make her dinner and my dinner, refill her water bottle with piping hot water, and get her her medications. After dinner, I helped her get situated in the bathroom and helped her wash her hair with no-rinse shampoo. She’s not supposed to shower until next Monday, so it’s a tricky situation.
For the next 6 weeks, I will be the cook, driver, and nurse around the house since the doctor has ordered my mom no driving for 6 weeks. I feel exhausted just thinking about it.
I appreciate you stopping by. Until next we chat. 🙂

My mom’s in a hospital as well, she was ill and at home, we needed to take care of her basic needs. She has a kidney stone, but situation is a little complicated since she has a strong inflammation and pulmonary embolism. But it should all be well, we just need to give it some time. Take care of your mom, and of yourself Yinglan.

I hope your moms recovery goes as smooth as possible and that you don’t go crazy!
The melons looks so wonderful! I haven’t grown melons since I lived in California. I do miss it! Maybe I’ll be brave next year?

Thank you. Haha, I’m trying not to go crazy. 😀
This is my second time growing melons. I grew last year in the backyard but the melons never ripened. It probably got too shady with the house blocking the sun. Now, it’s given me optimism that the front yard is the solution to grow melon where the sun is constantly beating down on it.

That’s a lot! I’m glad you got to enjoy a soccer game though, and that mom’s back surgery went smoothly. Good luck juggling work and caring for mom. It sounds like a handful!

Yes, it was a lot, especially it all happened in 3 days-time and yes, my mom is a handful, just picture the worst patient who refuses to take meds and moves around when she should be resting.

Was she a nurse? My mom is like that and she’s a nurse, lol

No, she’s just stubborn like her dad and siblings.
