The Unicorn Challenge – Dream Came True

A short piece of fiction for my first-time participating in the Unicorn Challenge

Why didn’t I do my usual research before I rushed myself into this? Why do I always do this to myself? I scolded myself as I trudged across the muddy path to the cows. My herd of cows and I have to milk them until I can afford to hire some help.

As I approached, Daisy let out a loud moo as her ears perked up and the corner of her lips curled. “Oh Daisy, what you smiling about? Come on, girl,” she followed me to the milking station, “let’s see what we got today.”

“You know, for a cow, you are strangely obedient,” I commented as I sat down on my tiny wooden stool.

Daisy said nothing. Of course, she wouldn’t respond. She’s a cow, what was I expecting, her to say, “thanks”? I sighed and continued milking.

Two hours later, with my hands officially numb and stuck in a fist position, I finally trudged back to my truck across from the muddy path. Sitting in the driver seat, I looked out at my herd, Daisy was once again standing there by the gate, smiling at me. I smiled back, reminding myself that no matter how hard this is, it’s my dream came true.

  1. Hello Yinglan and welcome to the Unicorn Challenge!
A dream that comes true is always a heartening story, and this one is no exception.
You portray Daisy the Cow as a real character!
And yes, the hard work involved in making this dream come true is evident in your story too.
A fine beginning on the Unicorn Challenge.
I hope we’ll see you again next week.

  2. Welcome to the Unicorn Challenge, Yinglan.

I thoroughly enjoyed the almost one-sided interaction between the two characters, and how you remind us that cows are people too!
