Sunday Poser #202 – Losing Height

Are you loosing inches?

So do you feel that Have you experienced height loss with age? If so, what have you done about it? Does it bothers you physically or mentally?

It absolutely scares me to think about losing height as I age. I currently stand at 4-foot-8-inches (142 cm). I’m this short because of a genetic mutation in my bones. It frightens me that I can be even shorter than I am now after a certain age.

My mom – age 58 – recently had her bones scanned and her height measured. This was before her back surgery. She came home announced proudly that she has not lost height. I think her lifestyle probably has something to do with it. Before her back surgery, she would be constantly walking on the treadmill. Even now, 3 weeks after her surgery, she would try to walk on the treadmill multiple times each day.

Her youngest sister, on the other hand, is a different story. She has lost height and I don’t think it occurred after she turned 50 because she turned 50 last year and I can swear she wasn’t this short a few years back.

Over the weekend, when I went for a walk with her, I could’ve sworn I was tall enough to look over her head a few times. We were on level ground and I was standing next to her. Her lifestyle is the polar opposite of my mom. She would sleep all day if I or my mom doesn’t take her somewhere or give her a job to do. If she’s not sleeping or at work or doing a task or in the back seat of either of our cars, she’s eating in the amount that’s equivalent to all my meals combine.

Me? I would judge my lifestyle somewhat semi-sedentary. I try to spend most of my time in the garden but when I’m not in the garden, I would end up sitting. I wonder whether I would lose height when I’m older. It feels like it’s something that’s inevitable but at the same time, it feels like it’s preventable.

  1. I used to be 5ft 5.5ins. When I had my health MOT a couple of years ago I was measured at 5ft 4ins. My husband’s 5ft 11 was down to 5ft 9 when he was last measured, but he was stooping a bit by then. I think it’s just the result of gravity pressing your spine down on itself. Maybe if you hang upside down from time to time it might take the pressure off?

    🙂

I am just a few weeks off 75, so you’ve a way to go yet.

  2. I have never even thought about it. I am nearly 74. I’ve had two spine ops and a hip replacement. My biggest concern is my teeth. I seem to lose at least one every year.
I may lose my second one before the year is out. Ha ha
I always wanted to be tiny but I grew to tall quickly in high school. I’m still tall. Don’t know exactly. 😊
