What Annoys Me: My Three Major Pet Peeves

Daily writing prompt
Name your top three pet peeves.

When it comes to pet peeves, I have so many that I can never name them all.

My biggest pet peeve has to be someone making assumptions about someone or certain places based on either someone’s appearance, gender, and race or that place’s people. I think that’s a very rude thing to do. It’s a pet peeve of mine because I happen to live with an entire family of people that do such thing and it drives me off the wall.

My second biggest pet peeve is when someone’s talking with his/her mouth full of food. One of the first thing I was taught by my step-father after coming to the U.S. was to never talk when my mouth is full of food. “It’s not lady-like,” he said.

It never bothered me or maybe because I’ve never seen anyone do it until when my mom’s family immigrated to the U.S. We used to have these family gathering where we would share a meal. My uncle (my mom’s sister’s husband) would be sitting across from me and he would have this habit of talking after shoving rice into his mouth. When he talked, you would see the food into his mouth. It’s such a revolting image that would make me instantaneously lose my appetite.

My other uncle’s (my mom’s brother) would do the same thing. Since they are my elder, I could never point it out the same way my step-father pointed it out to me.

My third pet peeve is when someone asks me things about China when they find out I’m from there like holidays, traditions, and places. I mean, I understand what they’re trying to but it’s not something I appreciate since I can probably only remember about 30-40% of my time in China and I’ve never really been outside my hometown during that decade.

Up until now, I’ve lived almost 23 years in the U.S., embracing the culture in the U.S. I don’t observe any of the Asian holidays nor do I adhere to Asian culture. I don’t think even my mom’s family understand this and maybe this is why this frustrates me so much. I was raised by a Caucasian step-father and a semi-absentee Chinese mother. My mom spent a lot of my childhood working multiple jobs while my step-father looked after me. I don’t think anyone can really know how much impact it can have on a person’s life.

  1. This: “When he talked, you would see the food into his mouth. It’s such a revolting image that would make me instantaneously lose my appetite.” I know exactly what you mean and just thinking about can make me lose my appetite! Or when they’re talking with their mouth full and a little bit of food flies out of their mouth. Ugh!

I’ve often wondered why people make so many assumptions about others and I’ve never come up with a good answer. The only assumption I make is that everyone is a human just like me so treat them like I want to be treated. At least I hope they’re human because if there were aliens out there in human disguise it might not be good!

    1. Let’s just say, I’m glad there’s no more of these so-call “family gatherings.” So I no longer have to sit across from my uncle and his mouth full of food.

I think when it comes to assumptions, I think it’s because we are humans and we are all bias one way or another but do those biases really need to be spoken out loud? I sometimes feel like it’s better to have thoughts about these biases than to speak these biases out loud because unless you have facts to back it, these become assumptions.

  2. Haha .. I regulary wrote about Pet Peeves. One of mine is people smoking while people are eating. I sit on the outside terrace to enjoy the view not inhale your cigerette smoke. Which reminds me, I’m due for another Pet Peeve blogging moment.

I get you re people talking with their mouth full. I now say: “Enjoy your food, your thoughts can wait until you’ve swallowed your food. Enjoy”

    1. Smoking isn’t really a problem here because I live in an area where smoking is prohibited due to religion. I get it, I, too, find it annoying that people would smoke so close to outdoor terrace. When I visited the UK and Japan last year and saw people smoke, it reminded me I wasn’t at home anymore.

I don’t really understand why some people on talking when they have a mouth full of food. I agree, “your thoughts can wait.”
