#WeekendCoffeeShare – All about the Garden

Happy Saturday! Come on in and let’s chat! A big thanks to Natalie of Natalie the Explorer for hosting WeekendCoffeeShare.

It’s all about the garden this week as I continued to find places to transplant the spring vegetables. Transplanting is no longer hand, thanks to the loose raised bed soil. Now, it’s all about finding a spot to put it all. In the end, I did manage to find a spot for all of them. Yay!

Now, all I have to do is hope my spring vegetables will mature to an edible level so I can plant my summer vegetables. I’m trying a couple of new varieties of summer greens this year include komatsuna, which is a Japanese vegetable crossing spinach with mustard greens. Others varieties I’m trying include Senposai – cross between cabbage and mustered greens – and misome – cross between Komatsuna and tatsoi. All these greens are supposed to be very heat tolerant, so I’m crossing my fingers that I’ll get a harvest.

The tulips made a surprising appearance this week. I say surprising because I remember when I planted the bulbs 4 years ago, the bag read, “sunset.” Pink tulips was not what I planted and it seemed to be more and more pink each year.

In other areas of the garden, asparagus spears are rising from the ground like zombies. I planted them from transplants last year. I wasn’t expecting the asparagus spears to be harvestable this year, but they were. I harvested a small amount of spears last night for dinner, they were delicious, more tender and sweet than any of the stuff I used to buy at the grocery store.

At work, this week, I participated in a 5k walk. On the walk, I got to see some of the oldest houses in Salt Lake City. Actually, they should be called mansions, not houses. These mansions housed some of the earliest LDS church leaders when they began to settle down in Utah. I’ve driven up and down this road so many times but had never thought to park the car somewhere and explore on foot.

I finished at a little under an hour and was one of the people in the company to actually finished the 5k. Most of my coworkers turned back half-way. It was great exercise and allowed me to fulfill the step goal my watch has set for me to complete each day.

I hope you enjoyed this quick update on my week. See you again next week!
