#AtoZChallenge 2025 – Washington Crossing Historic Park

When you see this river, can you see George Washington and his soldier crossing in the midst of a northeaster during Christmas of 1776?

I can’t imagine it either. It’s been said that George Washington actually crossed at the narrowest point of of the river, which was where I stood on a bridge when I took the picture.

Washington Crossing was one of the places I requested to visit during the US-Canada road trip of 2022. I listen to quite a bit of US history podcasts and when it comes to the revolutionary war, George Washington crossing the Delaware River was a major turning point in the war. I imagined the event to be hard but still, I wanted to see the place to gauge the difficulty.

This bridge is located on the border of New Jersey and Pennsylvania. By crossing the bridge on the New Jersey, I entered Pennsylvania. It was the other reason I wanted to visit this site. I find that it’s more meaningful to cross a border on foot than in a car or another mode of transportation.

Like me, my mom is also a history nerd. Personally, I think I got that from her but I’m not as crazy as her to actually get an education degree to teach history.

She’s not as familiar with US history as I am, so it was a good learning opportunity for her. When we were walking to the bridge, she said, “So basically, the founding fathers took a gamble on George Washington crossing the Delaware and it paid off?”

From what I’ve learned Washington was not expected a blizzard to hit that night for sure but yes, I suppose there was a chance taken and it was paid off.
