#WeekendCoffeeShare – Again in the garden

Happy Saturday! Come on in! As always, a big thanks to Natalie of Natalie the Explorer for hosting WeekendCoffeeShare.

It was another week of up and down weather and it most likely will be the same in the upcoming week. As much as I welcome the rain, I’m not sure I enjoy the wind come of blow everything around before everything gets a good soak.

The chives I planted last year are beginning to flower while the lovage I planted a few years ago is getting tall and lush. I’m now trying to find ways to use this herb. The calendula I managed to overwinter is also starting to bloom. I hope to harvest and dry some of the blooms to use in a moisturizer.

I love the variety of flowers in the garden at this time of the year. So much colors.

I finally bought a table this week to put my trays of seedlings so I can finally move them off the front stoop and perhaps sleep easier knowing the seedlings are 2 feet off the ground.

I made the mistake of planting catmint in one of the flower beds about 2 years ago. Now and then, this vicious stray cat would come and lie on my flower bed, smashing my tulips and other flowers in the process. It even ripped out my newly transplanted agnastache a few days ago.

Oh, I’m so angry!

So angry that I wanted to put up fencing in the flower bed. You want to ruin my flowers, cat? No more playing nice with you.

I wondered if animals can hear my thoughts because the next night when I went to pull a bind weed out of the corner of my yard, my backyard neighbor’s dog ran up to the back fence, almost wanted to smash down the fence. It barked at me to the point I felt its saliva on my face. “I’m not an intruder, you dumbass!” I shouted at it as I retreated.

That’s not the only circumstance. My next door neighbor has these 2 dogs. Each time I approach my asparagus patch, it would run up and throw their bodies to the fence Then they would be barking non-stop. It’s utterly the most annoying thing ever.

Anyway, this week in the garden, I also caved in and planted some tomato plants. Tomato plants are usually planted on Mother’s Day here, which it’s next Sunday. However, this year has been extra warm with the last frost arriving some 15-20 days earlier than expected.

To play it safe though, I only planted bush determine-types tomatoes. Part of me is saying I should play it safe and wait until Mother’s day weekend to plant the vining tomatoes but who knows, I just might cave again.

  1. I can tell that you are experiencing warmer weather than we are 🙂 My chives usually bloom in July. Lovage is great to use for homemade herbal salt, mix equal part chopped lovage, big grain salt and any other herbs/garlic that you like. I usually use a blender. When mixed, spread it out at on a baking sheet and let it dry completely, either in room temperature or at a low temperature in the oven.

    1. The garden just had its first 80-degree day today. I immediately had to break out the shade clothes for all of the vegetables planted in early March. Most of those vegetables bolt at around 75-degrees.
I’m surprised by how warm it is this year. It’s not usually this warm in early May.
Wow, that’s a long ways away to see blooming chives in your corner of the world. I just hope the chives will drive away all the aphids.
Thanks for the tip on lovage, I’ll give it a go. 🙂

  2. Suggestion for keeping cats off your garden:
either pepper or orange peel. as both irritate their feet and they don’t like the taste when cleaning themselves so they stop coming. (IMO the latter works better)

    1. Is it ground black pepper or regular whole pepper? I don’t think it’s a good idea for me to put orange peel in flower beds, it might attract more unwelcome visitors.

      1. We used the stuff you buy for seasoning/sprinkling on your food.
Someone used to put those kiddies plastic windmill things in their flower beds, but I don’t know if it was to distract cats or birds. Of course, if the wind doesn’t blow, they won’t do much good!
