Eight-year-old Tommy hid in his bedroom, hugging his knees, feeling hungry and afraid. He hated it when his parents fought like this. Why, he wondered, and what did either of them do to end up like this, fighting, throwing furniture, and slamming doors? Sometimes, he wondered if there was a fuse had blown in their relationship and caused their relationship to stop working.
Tommy’s fascinated about all things electrical – fuses, currents, circuits – and his brain has a way of analyzing the world like an electronic circuit.
Suddenly, the slamming of doors made the walls of his bedroom shook and then came silence, is it over, Tommy wondered.
Written for Six Sentence Story. The prompt is “Fuse”.

This is such a powerful and heartbreaking glimpse into Tommy’s world—his fear, his quiet curiosity, and the way he tries to make sense of chaos through the lens of something he understands (circuits and fuses). The silence at the end is especially haunting. Beautifully written. 💔
