This is looking up from the inside of Ice Castles – a winter attraction in northern Utah. My first and last time at Ice Castle was in January 2019 before my mom got discharged from the military due to medical reasons. Back then, each month, there was one weekend where I would be alone and could do I liked but of course, after my mom’s siblings moved to the US at the end of 2018, there was no more alone time. Everyone wanted me to take them somewhere.
There’s not many places to go in the winter. The roads with the pretty views are usually closed and the weather can be quite unpredictable.
I remember that weekend, the day before we went to Ice Castles, my aunt, cousin, and I went to the ski resort 15 minutes away. None of us skied. I can’t ski because of a painful bone formation near my left ankle. We took the ski lift to the top and enjoyed a cup of hot cocoa and watched as skiers disappear down the hill.

Ice Castles was sort of a last-minute plan because I haven’t thought of Ice Castles. It wasn’t something that one would think of. Again, it was my aunt, cousin, and I drove almost an hour to Midway – an European inspired town filled with unique architecture.
It wasn’t difficult to locate the attraction. For once, Google Maps didn’t make me take any sort of detour. It led me straight there. I didn’t know what to expect because what can one expect of a place that’s made entirely of ice? It turned out to be quite… cool, although I couldn’t stay long as I seemed to feel colder the longer I wandered in the castle.
Writing this post got me curious, so I did a quick search. It turned out the Ice Castle is skipping this year. It’s probably too warm to have an Ice Castle. Oh well, there’s always next year.
