Friday Fictioneers: Temporary Shelter

PHOTO PROMPT © Jennifer Pendergast

Lying in a sleeping bag, Matt stares up at the stained glass by the church’s dome. The apartment he had lived for the last 5 years was no more, a negligent neighbor had fallen asleep with a lit-cigarette in his hand. With only the clothes he’s wearing and his favorite blanket, Matt evacuated the building and was transported to the church for shelter.

“Matt?” A familiar voice calls. Matt sits up to see his mother running toward him. “Are you okay, honey?” His mother wraps him in a tight embrace.

“Mmm hmm,” is all Matt can say as he sobs.

    1. Thank you. I saw the picture and almost instantaneously, the story began to pan out in my head. I feel like temporary shelters are usually either in a school, church or a stadium, depending on the number.
